@thevelvetonion: “To make up for things being a tad quieter around here, here’s a pensive-looking Fantasy Man to be getting on with…”
#dunno why#but he looks sad :(#like he’s struggling to keep believing in his fantasy world amidst the whole world telling him he’s crazy and childish#and needs to be ‘put away’#fantasy man is such an interesting character and the closest to Noel himself out of all of them I think (via Isitthattimealready)
Fantasy Man is definitely one of the characters closest to Noel himself—an idealistic crusader for and preserver of fantasy in the world, struggling against the bleakness and pain of reality and trying to turn it into something more beautiful, imaginative, kinder, purer. (Remember, Fantasy Man is constantly questing to keep protect the innocence of the fantasy world from the contamination of reality, with all its porn and swearing and general unkindness.) And that definitely seems to be how Noel sees his own function in the world: a fantasy/comedy knight-errant, always tilting at windmills and trying to make the world a little funnier and kinder and more beautiful. The fact that it’s established that Fantasy Man also uses his fantasy and quests as an escape from a reality where he doesn’t fit in and is frequently misunderstood, mocked, and humiliated for his temperament and interests… well, that’s probably autobiographical, too. The sadness beneath the beautiful fantasy and funny jokes is real.
All of which is to say: this picture really gets you right in the feels, doesn’t it?
